After much wrangling and dissent within, the BJP Sunday announced that Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had been named chairman of the election management committee for the Lok Sabha polls.
The announcement was made by party president Rajnath Singh at the end of the party's two-day national executive committee, which saw heavy wrangling between a section backed by party patriarch L.K. Advani, who was opposing Modi's ascent, and another group backing Modi's candidature.
"Coming Lok Sabha polls are a big challenge. We are going in to win. Keeping the campaign in mind, I have appointed Narendra Modi as the head of the campaign committee for the general elections," Singh said.
"The decision has been taken on the base of consensus. We are sure the BJP will lead the next government," Singh told the media outside the venue of the BJP conclave.
The BJP president was accompanied by Sushma Swaraj, Arun Jaitley and Ananth Kumar.
