Morroco's Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ), in coordination with the Maritime Gendarmerie and the Royal Marine, foiled "one of the biggest and the most dangerous" hard drugs trafficking operations in Dakhla city.
A cargo of cocaine from a Latin-American country, which was seized, was loaded off the coast of Dakhla aboard a fishing boat, the BCIJ said on Sunday in a statement, adding that the owner of the boat is wanted in connection with a similar case, MAP news agency reported.
The large-scale operation took place on the basis of precise security information and data collected on drug cartels which try to use the strategic location of the country to make it a transit point for their criminal activities.
The investigations led to the arrest of the instigator of this operation and the owner of the boat, the source said, adding that the two persons have criminal records in drugs trafficking.
The two persons were remanded in custody pending the completion of the investigation led under the supervision of the competent public prosecutor's office.
Investigations are underway to identify the other people involved in the drug trafficking operation.
