Everton's David Moyes has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager after the end of the season.

Moyes, whose contract at the Goodison Park ends at the end of the season, is likely to be named Ferguson's successor before United's next game, Sunday, against Swansea.

Everton, however, have played down the rumour of Moyes,50, replacing fellow Scot at Old Trafford.

"There has been no approach by Manchester United to Everton regarding manager David Moyes. The relationship is such between both clubs that any contact would be made officially through the club. David is still under contract at Everton and so any approach would be official," Paul Tyrell, Everton's director of communications, was quoted as saying by The Sun.

But Moyes enjoys a good relationship with the 71-year-old Ferguson, who will be promoted as a director and ambassador of the club. Moyes was offered the job of Ferguson's assistant 1999-2000. Ferguson would prefer a candidate with whom he will have better working relations at Old Trafford.

While many names, including those of Jose Mourinho and Jupp Hynkes are doing the round, Moyes seems to be the preferred choice for the Manchester United management.

Moyes's doesn't enjoy a great record at Everton since arriving from Preston North End in March 2002. He lacks a trophy and his experience of Champions League doesn't go beyond the qualifying rounds. But Moyes has the ability to build teams and promote youth and it is something what Manchester United are looking for.
