A world record attempt by 12,76,425 students in Madhya Pradesh for washing their hands together on the 2014 Global Handwashing Day has been officially recognised, an official said here on Friday.
The attempt, by students at 13,196 venues in Madhya Pradesh's 51 districts under the supervision of the state's Panchayat and Rural development department on October 16, 2014, has been recorded in the Guinness Book of World Records.
The record was earlier being held collectively by three nations -- Argentina, Peru and Mexico-- in 2011 when 7,40,870 people participated in the attempt.
Aruna Sharma, chief secretary, Panchayat and Rural Development, on Friday said the programme to wash hands on such a large scale was organised to create public awareness and duly video recorded at all the venues.
