Mumbai police whisk off Gurunath Meiyappan for IPL probe

Mumbai police whisked off Gurunath Meiyappan, son-in-law of Indian cricket board chief N. Srinivasan, to the police headquarters shortly he landed here Friday evening.

Police are likely to interrogate Meiyappan in connection with the IPL spot fixing scam after his name was revealed by Bollywood actor Vindu Dara Singh Randhawa, currently in police custody.

A team of Crime Branch sleuths had reached Chhattrapati Shivaji International Airport's domestic terminal shortly before Meiyappan was expected to arrive by a chartered aircraft around 7.30 p.m. from Madurai.

As he stepped out of the arrival terminal, he was escorted by the sleuths to a waiting police vehicle and driven off to the Crime Branch office in Mumbai Police Headquarters near Crawford in south Mumbai.

Police sources say Meiyappan would be questioned separately on various issues, including the recent spot fixing scam, betting and match fixing.

Subsequently, he would be confronted with Vindu and the duo would be jointly interrogated to verify their statements.

So far, he has not been detained and a decision on his arrest would be taken only after his interrogation, police officials said.

Meiyappan rushed here following summons by the Mumbai police stuck on his residence door and delivered to his office in Chennai Thursday. He was given time till 5 p.m. Friday to respond to the police summons.

Earlier Friday, he reportedly sought time till Monday to report to Mumbai police but his plea was rejected, compelling him to fly in here.
