Myanmar's outgoing President U Thein Sein on Tuesday congratulated U Htin Kyaw of the National League for Democracy (NLD) on being elected as the president for the next five years.
In an announcement by the president's office hours after the presidential election ended on the day, U Thein Sein said the state and the people take pride over the election, Xinhua reported.
The statement said the transfer of office of the head of state has already been arranged.
In Tuesday's presidential election, U Myint Swe from the military and U Henry Van Htee Yu from the NLD were also elected as the first and the second vice presidents respectively.
