The prestigious Nalanda University plans to launch a School of Public Health next year which aims to elevate the health indicators of the population in the district, its Vice Chancellor said here on Monday.

"The next school we are launching will be the School of Public Health. That will be a unique school. I don't think anywhere in Asia we have a school of public health like that. It will drive the message that if you a have a good school of public health then you can impact the health indicator of the whole district," Vice Chancellor Gopa Sabharwal told IANS here on the sidelines of the 'Xuan Zang and China-India Friendly Exchanges' organised by the Consulate of China in Kolkata.

She said the entire Nalanda district will become the field for the school which will have a soft opening in 2017.

"The whole district is going to become the field for that school. If you have a good school of public health then you put public health in the agenda of the medical school nearby. It will help raise the standard of the nearest medical school. The solution will be that everybody's health indicator will improve," Sabharwal said, adding the academic session would likely to commence in 2018.

The varsity has School of Historical Studies, School of Ecology and Environment Studies and School of Buddhist Studies, Philosophy and Comparative Religions.
