The response to the country-wide strike on Wednesday called by trade unions demanding better wages has been "unprecedented" and "outstanding", said All India Trade Union Congress general secretary Gurudas Dasgupta.
"The response to the strike has been unprecedented. It is sweeping and outstanding. Millions of workers from across the country have joined us," Dasgupta told IANS.
He said he did not anticipate such a response.
"Even in Delhi, we are seeing such an impact for the first time. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are off the roads, post offices and banks are closed. Even Gurgaon is closed," he said.
Dasgupta said that reports from Assam, Odisha, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal, to name a few, too indicate the response has been sweeping.
He said the labour minister asked them to withdraw the strike but they will decide the future course of action on Wednesday.
