A record 20,091 cases were settled Saturday at the National Lok Adalat organised at the Agra Civil Court, and more than Rs.4 crore collected in fines and penalties, officials said.

A large number of family disputes were settled by Additional District Judge Sudip Bannerjee who united 18 families, while District Judge Shashi Kant resolved a large number of accident cases, helping victims collect compensation.

The nodal judge for the Lok Adalat settled 39 cases, while Chief Judicial Magistrate Anil Kumar was able to sort out more than 5,000 bank related disputes.

The district officials were satisfied with the response to the initiative by the Supreme Court. Advocate Rajveer Singh said such Lok Adalats should be more frequently held to clear the backlog of pending cases.

The National Lok Adalat, held simultaneously in the Supreme Court and courts all over the country, Saturday settled over 35 lakh cases concerning accident claims, matrimonial disputes, dud cheques and traffic fines, among others, in a single day.
