Close to a hundred students from nine Indian states are participating in the ongoing National Science Drama festival here, officials said on Thursday.

Inaugurated on Thursday, the two-day festival is being organised by the Birla Industrial and Technological Museum (BITM) on behalf of the National Council of Science Museums to impart non-formal scientific education to the youth.

Science dramas on topics of social relevance are prepared and enacted by school students in a four-tier format -- district level, state level, zonal level and finally the national level, BITM said.

"Although the event is held in a competitive format till the zonal level, it acquires a festive character at the national level where 10 teams, winner and the runners-up from five zones of the country -- east, northeast, west, north and south -- present their acts, and are felicitated," it said.

The 10 teams this year were selected from Odisha, West Bengal, Tripura, Assam, Goa, Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab and Kerala.

"This festival plays the role of sowing the seeds of scientific inquisitiveness in the minds of the young, tender brains. It eradicates irrational views, encourages radical thinking and gives an understanding of the basics of modern technology," the organisers said.
