An alert has been sounded in Uttar Pradesh following intelligence reports that a terrorist group may try to sneak in from the Nepal border, police said.
Following the tip-off, commandos have been stationed at Ayodhya, Mathura, Varanasi and other sensitive places.
An official said the tip-off was specific and prior to Independence Day, and police was leaving nothing to chance. Hence security has been upgraded in all 75 districts of the state.
Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) R.K. Vishwakarma told IANS that security has also been enhanced at the porous Indo-Nepal border so as to ensure that terrorists are unable to infiltrate from the Himalayan country into India.
"Police and other security agencies have been put on high alert on the border and checking of vehicles has been strengthened. We are leaving nothing to chance," the top police official said.
A letter instructing all district police chiefs to step up vigil before and on Aug 15, has also been sent.
