Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani Wednesday said that the government will launch a new scheme for credit transfer Nov 11, a move slated to bring relief to students forced to take a break in their education.

Speaking at the session, "Which Comes First: Employment or Employability?" at the India Economic Summit here, Irani said that Indian education system currently does not have a system of credit transfers between institutions that was a major issue for those students who have been forced to take a break in their education.

"It is for this reason that the government is now announcing a scheme for credit transfer on November 11," she said.

The scheme is expected to cover students from class nine uptil the post graduation level and may also be extended to PhD courses, depending on the feedback received.

She also announced that the government was encouraging universities to set up placement cells so as to encourage dialogue between students and employers on the skills sets required.

Further stressing on the need to "rejuvenate the teaching profession" and bring back the respect it once enjoyed, Irani said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's address on Teachers' Day Sep 5 was a step in that direction.

She added that it was hoped that the initiative would "help encourage more young people to turn to the teaching profession as a career".
