In its endeavour to combat increasing pollution levels and global warming, NGO Gayatri Parivar on Sunday completed 300 consecutive weeks of tree plantation in the northern suburbs of Kolkata.
The youth wing of Gayatri Pariwar, which has been undertaking tea plantation drive every Sunday over the past six years, has planted around 28,000 plus plants - many of which now are blooming and bearing fruits.
The areas covered inlude Agarpara, Panihati, Kamarhati, and Belgharia in the neighbouring North 24 Parganas districts.
On the occasion of the 300th consecutive week of tea plantation within the campus of the Texmaco Estate, Belgharia, Chinmay Pandya, Pro Vice Chancellor of Dev Sanskriti Viswavidyalaya, Haridwar, advised youth to play a greater role for uplift for the society as a whole.
The NGO started the drive in 2010, with the active participation of 150 youths.
Gayatri Pariwar Youth Group Kolkata has been awarded this year by the World Earth Day Network for its go green campaign.
