The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Monday sought a report from the Delhi Police commissioner on the alleged severe beating of an auto-rickshaw driver and snatching Rs.10,000 from him in the capital.

The incident occurred July 31 when police nabbed Chand Mohammad in east Delhi's Seelampur where some people were playing cards.

"The commission has issued notice to the Delhi Police commissioner and deputy commissioner of police and has sought reports within two weeks in the matter," said an NHRC official.

Those playing cards ran away when they saw a police constable and his associate approaching. But the victim, a bystander, was caught by the police personnel, the official said.

Police demanded money from him and when he refused, they took him to a police station and beat him up severely, according to media reports.

"They also snatched Rs.10,000 from him, which he was carrying to repay the installment of his auto-rickshaw loan," said the officer.

Chand Mohammad sustained grievous injuries.
