The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Thursday issued notice to the Uttar Pradesh government over the alleged rape of a teenaged girl in Mathura district.
Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report that said the Dalit girl was allegedly gang-raped by six youths in Pingri village July 19, the commission issued notice to the district magistrate and police superintendent of Mathura, calling for a report within two weeks.
"The commission has observed that the contents of the press report, if true, raise a serious issue of violation of human rights of the victim," the NHRC said.
Reportedly, the girl had gone to a temple to attend a religious event and was abducted from a nearby field where she had gone to relieve herself.
