Authorities of a city women's college, where Calcutta University Vice Chancellor Sugato Marjit was heckled during a demonstration by women students, suspended nine of the agitators on Friday.

The vice chancellor, who was pushed and shoved by two students within the premises of the Vivekananda College for Women on Tuesday, said a boy had initially stopped his car. He had alleged that the incident was "instigated" by outsiders and appeared "pre-planned".

"As many as 92 students had participated in the agitation. Out of them, nine have been suspended for a year while 77 have apologised. Four students were outsiders (from Deshbandhu College).

"We have written a letter to the principal of that college. One male (an outsider) was caught outside making a video and we are going to lodge an FIR against him," said Vivekananda College for Women principal Soma Bhattacharya.

She had earlier claimed the boy had identified himself as a "soldier of (West Bengal Chief Minister) Mamata Banerjee".

The students were holding the demonstration demanding that 65 of them who had failed to clear the second year examination should be promoted to the next class.
