With the upcoming Kannur airport likely to become operational next year, state-owned Bekal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC) wants fresh investment in the hospitality sector in the northern districts of the state which are close to the airport.

"This region comprises of unspoilt beaches, backwaters and hill stations and with the airport coming up, this could well be a place where investment can come, especially from the non-resident Keralites," BRDC Ltd Managing Director T.K. Manzoor said.

The BRDC has been working to promote the northern districts of Kannur and Kasargode and has been successful in attracting big names in the hospitality industry like The Taj and The Lalit, among others, to the region.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for Keralites in the Gulf and other regions to invest back home before returning for good," the official said.

Manzoor is also holding a two-day workshop for the aspiring tourism entrepreneurs in the northern town of Nileshwaram on December 11 and 12.

"The two-day programme will focus on finding new opportunities for the entrepreneurs, coordinating them and providing guidelines for best practices," Manzoor said.
