North and central India will mostly remain dry, the east and northeastern regions will see some showers, while southern India will continue to receive rain in the first half of October, weather forecaster Skymet said on Thursday.

"Northern and central India will not witness any rainfall. It would remain mostly dry here," Skymet CEO Jatin Singh told IANS.

He, however, said eastern and northeastern India would see some showers in the first part of October, while rainfall would continue in the southern parts of the country.

There was 14 percent deficit rainfall in the country during the southwest monsoon period -- between June 1 and September 30.

"Rainfall is mainly an ocean driven phenomenon. It was not in favour of India during the period and monsoon failed miserably in July and August, and ended in September on a disappointing note," he said.
