North Korea Wednesday held the first session of its newly elected parliament and formed a new government.

The first session of the 13th Supreme People's Assembly (SPA) re-elected top leader Kim Jong Un the first chairman of the National Defense Commission, Xinhua reported citing the country's official KCNA news agency.

It elected 687 deputies across the country last month, who will serve a five-year term.

The SPA, the highest legislative body of the country, has the power to adopt, amend or supplement enactments to the constitution, determine state policies and budgets, and adjust the country's leadership.
