Aage Hareide from Norway was named as the new coach of the Danish football team at a press conference held here on Thursday.

The 62-year-old previously coached Swedish club Malmo FF. He replaced Morten Olsen who had stepped down with immediate effect following Denmark's defeat in the Euro 2016 qualifying play-offs, reports Xinhua.

"Denmark has great football traditions with many participation at the European Championships. Our team and our fans deserve to go to the World Cup in 2018, and I am looking forward to fight for it with the players," said Hareide.

The Danish Football Association said Hareide will take the rein for two years from March 1, 2016, with an option to extend for another two years.

As a coach, Hareide has won league titles in all of the Scandinavian countries, and has been in charge of the Norwegian national team for five years.

In his playing career, Hareide played for Hoedd and Molde in Norway as well as Manchester City and Norwich City in England. Hareide was capped 50 times for Norway.
