A court here Monday asked Tihar jail officials to file a reply to Indian Mujahideen co-founder Yasin Bhatkal's plea that he was not being provided proper food in the Islamic holy month of Ramadan and treated worse than an animal in prison.

"The applicant (Bhatkal) is observing fast as this is the holy month of Ramadan and he is not provided timely and proper food," said the application filed by Bhatkal.

The application was filed before Additional Sessions Judge Raj Kapoor, who directed Tihar jail authorities to file a report by July 23.

The application filed by Bhatkal's counsel M.S. Khan said his client "has been kept in solitary confinement and is not allowed to move out from his cell and has not seen the sunlight except during his transportation for the purpose of production before the court".

Bhatkal, arrested in August last year near the Nepal border, is accused of being involved in various terror strikes in the country.
