US President Barack Obama will host his Brazilian counterpart Dilma Rousseff at the White House for a state visit in October, it was announced Wednesday.

The Oct. 23 visit will allow the two leaders to "continue developing and strengthening the strategic partnership" between their countries, reported Xinhua citing Jay Carney, the White House press secretary.

Obama travelled to Brazil, the world's seventh largest economy, in March 2011. Rousseff returned the visit a year later. This time, Obama will host a state dinner for his guest, as Rousseff is the first ever Brazilian leader on a state visit to the US since 1995.

"The president looks forward to welcoming President Rousseff back to Washington and working with her to advance our increasingly common interests as two hemispheric and global partners," Carney said in a statement.

US vice president Joe Biden Wednesday started a three-day visit to Brazil.
