October air passenger traffic up 18 percent

Domestic air passenger traffic rose 18.80 percent in October to 70.39 lakh from 59.25 lakh registered during the corresponding month of last year.

During September, the air passenger traffic had surged by 14.56 percent to 66.66 lakh.

Data furnished by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Thursday showed that passenger traffic during the January-October period grew by 19.96 percent.

"Passengers carried by domestic airlines during January-October 2015 were 660.60 lakh as against 550.69 lakh during the corresponding period of previous year, thereby registering a growth of 19.96 percent," the DGCA said in its statistical analysis.

Earlier, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) had said that India's domestic demand had soared owing to significant increases in service frequencies and improvements in economic growth.

Furthermore, the DGCA data showed that low cost carrier (LCC) SpiceJet had the highest passenger load factor during the month under review at 93 percent.

The LCC was followed by another budget carrier GoAir (79.8), IndiGo (79.4), Trujet (79), Air Costa (78.9), Jet Airways (77.90), Air India's domestic operations (76.09), JetLite (74.9), Air Pegasus (73.2), AirAsia India (67.7) and Vistara (62.4).

At the same time, data on the on-time performance showed Vistara leading the industry with 93.7 percent punctuality at four major airports of Bengaluru, Delhi, Hyderabad and Mumbai.

It was followed by IndiGo (89.2), SpiceJet (86.9), Jet Airways and JetLite (85.3) and Air India's domestic operations (75.5) being on schedule.

Meanwhile, Trujet had the highest numbers of cancellations at 14.95 percent followed by Air Costa (6.87), Air Pegasus (4.25), GoAir (0.70), Air India's domestic operations (0.65), Vistara (0.47), Jet Airways (0.39), IndiGo (0.17), SpiceJet (0.13).

"The overall cancellation rate of scheduled domestic airlines for the month of October 2015 has been 0.57 percent," the aviation regulator said.

According to the data, a total of 727 passenger related complaints had been received.

Air India's domestic operations had the highest complaints rate per 10,000 passengers in the month under review.

Air Pegasus's share stood at (1.9). It was followed by Jet Airways and JetLite (1.4), SpicJet (1.2), Trujet (1.3), Air Pegasus (1.1), SpiceJet and GoAir (1.00), Air Costa (0.9), AirAsia India (0.8), IndiGo (0.6) and Vistara (0.2).

LCC IndiGo achieved the highest market share in the month under review at 36.8 percent followed by Jet Airways (18.8), Air India (15.5), SpiceJet (12.8), GoAir (8.4) and JetLite (2.4 percent).

AirAsia India had a market penetration of 2.1 percent, Vistara reported a market share of 1.7 percent, followed by Air Costa's (0.8), Air Pegasus (0.3) and Trujet (0.3).
