The Organization of Islamic Cooperation held a meeting here on Tuesday to discuss the escalation of violence between Israelis and Palestinians following the recent crisis over Al-Aqsa Mosque in East Jerusalem.

The meeting was attended by foreign ministers, with Mohammad Javad Zarif present for Iran, Adel al-Jubeir representing Saudi Arabia and Jordan's Ayman Al-Safadi, among others, Efe news reported.

According to the Turkish Foreign Ministry, it is expected that the foreign ministers of the 45-country OIC will make a joint statement later.

The meeting took place on the initiative of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in response to the recent escalation of violence after Israel imposed restrictions on access to Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem after an attack, according to Turkish news agency Anadolu.

However, the situation has been defused since Friday and the Palestinians returned to pray unrestrictedly in that sacred place on Sunday.

A week ago, Erdogan called on all Muslims all over the world to visit the mosque in Jerusalem and "protect" it.
