Over 200 Karnataka legislators are multi-millionaires

Over 200 members of the newly elected 225-member Karnataka assembly are 'crorepatis' (multi-millionaires), said an election watchdog after analyzing their declared assets.

Of 218 assets studied by the Karnataka Election Watch (KEW) showed that 203 of them, that is 93 percent, are "crorepatis", up from 63 percent who were 'crorepatis' in the ougoing assembly, the NGO said in a release Friday.

The Congress, which won 121 seats of the 223 for which voting took place Sunday, had the maximum number of multi-millionaires - 112 out of 118 assets analysed, the release said.

The Bharatiya Janata Party's 37 legislators out of 40 elected and 36 out of 38 analyzed of Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) are also 'crorepatis', it said. The number of JD-S legislators is 40.

The release said 74 of the 218 legislators analyzed have declared criminal cases against them, of which 39 face serious criminal cases like attempt to murder, kidnapping, dacoity and assault against women.

Party-wise, Congress has 37 out of 118, BJP 13 out of 40 and JD-S 12 out of 38, Karnataka Janata Party (KJP) headed by former BJP leader B. S. Yeddyurappa 3 out of 6, BSR Congress of former BJP minister B. Sriramulu 2 out of4, Samajwadi Party 1 out of 1.

Of the five legislators facing murder cases, two are from Congress and one each from BJP and BSR Congress and one independent.

Corruption cases are there against 11 legislators including 4 from BJP, 3 from Congress and 1 BSR Congress and 1 Independent.
