Pacific Island leaders reach Jaipur for summit

Leaders of 14 Pacific Island nations on Friday arrived here for the second Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC) Summit.

"Delhi, Agra and now Jaipur," external affairs ministry spokesperson Vikas Swarup said in a welcome Tweet as the leaders reached the Pink City. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje welcomed them.

On Thursday, the leaders went to Agra to view the Taj Mahal.

Ahead of the summit, the leaders are to visit the Amer Fort Palace here.

The island nations which taking part in the FIPIC summit include Cook Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Nauru, Kiribati, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands, Samoa, Niue, Palau, Micronesia, Marshall Islands, Fiji and Papua New Guinea.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the summit at Jaipur's Rambagh Hotel. The forum, formed in 2014, held its first summit in Suva, Fiji, during Modi's visit.

On Wednesday, Modi said: "I welcome all the leaders and delegates who are coming to India... I am very optimistic about FIPIC Summit. Am sure it will strengthen India's bond with the Pacific island nations."
