An Islamist extremist from northern Gaza was shot dead on Tuesday in an exchange of fire with Gaza security forces, the interior ministry said.
A 27-year-old member of a Salafi group in Gaza opened fire on security forces when they tried to arrest him in his house, the ministry's spokesman Iyad al-Bozzom said in a statement, according to Xinhua news agency.
The forces fired back, killing the militant who refused to turn himself in, the spokesman added.
Sources close to Salafi groups in Gaza told Xinhua that the slain militant was affiliated with a group called Ansar al-Dawala al-Jihadeya (supporters of the Jihadi state).
The identity of the Islamist is still unknown.
The spokesman added that explosive devices and rocket propelled grenade (RPG) missiles were found in the house.
