Uttar Pradesh ranks among the worst states for policing due to a shortage of personnel and deficiencies in infrastructure but the government is planning a recruitment drive to fill the gaps, a senior state home department official said Thursday.
Principal Secretary (Home) R.N. Srivastava said at a press conference here that the state police would ensure the coming Ramadan and Shivratri festivals pass off peacefully although it lacks sufficient personnel with the force's present strength only 137,000.
He was here to monitor the law and order situation in districts like Ghaziabad, Hapur and Gautam Budh Nagar ahead of the festivals due in the next two months. State police chief Devraj Nagar is also accompanying him and was also present on the occasion.
Srivastava said that the state plans to recruit 4,000 sub inspectors in July and August, while0 further recruitment of 2,000 sub inspectors is also on the cards.
He said that the government also plans to settle the ongoing legal dispute over the recruitment of 3,300 sub inspectors, while the recruitment of 41,000 constables will be initiated to meet their shortage.
After the fresh recruitment, the government would be able to meet the present need of the officers and constabulary for the time being, he said.

He also said that to resolve the complaints of late registration of first information reports (FIRs), the Indian government has launched a program of Crime Criminal Tracking Network System (CCTNS), which also being implemented in the state.
At present, the state has launched this pilot project in three districts - Moradabad, Ghazipur and Lakhimpur Kheri - in its first phase, and it would be expanded to cover the entire state in four phases.
Director General of Police Nagar said that efforts are on to make police more sensitized and workshops and refresher courses are being conducted to change the mindset of the police officers.
He said that the districts in the NCR are most important since they are the gateway to the national capital and law and order situation in these districts has a direct impact on the state image on the national level.
"The state is concerned to maintain effective policing throughout the state but especially in the NCR districts of Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar and Hapur," he added.
