Sahitya Akademi marked the launch of the Peruvian poet Cesar Vallejo's trilingual anthology - a collection of poems - in Spanish, Hindi and Bengali here on Monday.
This anthology was published by Sahitya Akademi, an organization for the promotion of literature in India, in cooperation with Peruvian ambassador Javier Paulinich Verlade and the Embassy of Peru.
Paulinich said the book was to promote Peruvian culture among Indian readers, adding the book was possible through long efforts made by Indian litterateurs and scholars.
While addressing the gathering at the book launch, the editor of the book, Prof. Shyama Prasad Ganguly, who had previously taught Latin America studies at the Jawaharlal Nehru University, said: "Cesar Vallejo was one of the greatest Peruvian poets who ever lived. His revolutionary thoughts are very important for India."
Ganguly added that Vallejo was never projected the way other Latin American poet like Pablo Neruda was in India. He said the initiative to translate his work into more than one language was the first of its kind in the country.
