Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday reiterated the opposition's demand that Prime Minister Narendra Modi should attend the debate on demonetisation in the Rajya Sabha.

Interacting with media persons outside Parliament House, the Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha said: "He (Modi) should listen to the debate."

"As far as my understanding goes, he (Modi) should have come (to the house) and made the statement," Azad said.

He also demanded to know if the Prime Minister was supposed to come to Parliament only once a year when he has to reply to the presidential address to the joint sitting of the House.

"Should the Prime Minister hear and speak just once a year in Parliament?" he asked.

Both the houses of the Parliament have been witnessing adjournments and disruption over the issue of demonetisation for the past four days.

The Rajya Sabha had a day-long debate on demonetisation on the very first day of the on-going Winter Session of Parliament, but opposition parties became restless when Modi did not show up in the House during the debate.

From November 17 onwards, they started demanding the presence of Prime Minister Modi in the House, saying he should be present as demonetisation is an issue of national importance.

The Winter session began on November 16.
