Police in the Pakistani city of Lahore have initiated a crackdown on cricket betting and arrested 15 people from across the city, according to media reports Monday.

With the ICC World Cup under way in Australia and New Zealand, betting and gambling on the matches was also going on in full swing, News International reported.

During the crackdown, laptops, registers and telephones were recovered from the bookmakers.

Police said they would continue to take action against gamblers and bookies.

Pakistan has always been infamous for cricket betting and gambling and even players have been accused of accepting money from bookmakers to sway the outcome of matches.

In 2011, former Pakistani batsman Salman Butt, and bowlers Mohammad Asif and Mohammad Amir were convicted for spot-fixing and jailed. They were also banned from cricket for varying periods on account of their offences.
