A police constable, posted in Ghaziabad, was shot dead by about half a dozen assailants at a station in Uttar Pradesh's Baghpat district Tuesday, police said.

The attack took place in Baraut town of Baghpat when constable Kishan Pal was waiting for a train at the railway station to go to Ghaziabad for his duty.

Police said Kishan Pal (58), a resident of Bawli village in Baghpat, commuted daily to his duty from his village.

He was sitting on a bench at the railway station when about half a dozen assailants approached him around 8.30 a.m. and opened indiscriminate fire at him and fled.

Police and the locals took him to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The attending doctor said the constable sustained six bullet injuries on his head, chest and abdomen.

Police in Baraut police claimed that Kishan Pal's son was involved in a criminal case in the village, and the attack on the constable could be linked to this.

"The local police have informed me that Kishan Pal's son was involved in a murder case which happened in 2011. Kishan Pal was pursuing the case in the court so the opposite party planned to eliminate him. Today they succeeded in eliminating him at Baraut railway station," said Ghaziabad's Superintendent of Police (City) Shiv Shankar Yadav.

"He was posted as a constable driver on a vehicle in a team especially maintained for emergency services," Yadav added.
