FC Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa has defended the Portuguese football club's Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui who is facing criticism from some fans.

Da Costa on Monday stressed that Lopetegui has "the correct philosophy" for the game, emphasising that the Dragons are already leading the Primeira Liga after the results of last weekend, Efe reported.

The club's president told reporters that Lopetegui is not at the club "to be nice" but to "work and help put Porto in first position".

The Dragons won on Sunday 3-1 against Academica and snatched three points allowing it to move into the leading position above Sporting Lisbon, who drew on their visit to Uniao Madeira 0-0.

The Porto president played down fans' criticism, which has became more frequent since the team was eliminated from the European Champions League, and recalled that other Porto coaches were whistled at in the past "because the fans are very demanding".

Porto reached 36 points on Sunday in the Primeira Liga with 11 victories, three draws and no defeats.
