Clashes erupted Tuesday in north Kashmir's Kupwara town between police and civilian protestors after seven guerrillas were killed in the district the previous day.

A senior police officer said a stone-pelting mob attacked the police station in Kupwara, around 100 km from here, Tuesday morning destroying the sentry posts.

"Police is exercising restraint in handling the mob. We have used tear smoke shells and baton charges to disperse the mob.

"The situation is under control," the officer said.

Two journalists who had gone to the town to cover the army press briefing on Monday's gunfight were injured in the clashes.

The army Monday killed seven separatist guerrillas in the forest area of Dardpora village in Kupwara.
