The Punjab Police has tied up with the state's health department and the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) to identify mentally ill people and get them admitted for treatment.

Under the project, mentally ill people who are languishing aimlessly and are not capable of taking care of themselves, especially in the cold winter season, will be identified and will be admitted to the Institute of Mental Health, Amritsar, for their treatment and recovery.

Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Sumedh Singh Saini directed field officers to accord top priority to the well-being of such people and tie up with health officials to extend them all necessary help, especially in these extreme winter conditions.

He asked them to coordinate with the managements of different social and religious organisations and NGOs for taking care of such people.

Principal Secretary, Health and Family Welfare, Vini Mahajan said that since mentally unstable people were not able to take care of themselves in cold conditions and live in miserable situation, all help should be extended to them.
