Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh on Wednesday opined that party vice president Rahul Gandhi can step into the shoes of chief in case Sonia Gandhi is feeling "tired" in leading the Congress.
"Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi can step into Sonia's shoes if she feels that time has come for her to go and that she is tired of being at the helm of the party since 1997," former Punjab chief minister and a sitting Lok Sabha MP from Amritsar, Amarinder Singh, said in an interview to NDTV.
However, he added that assembly poll results on May 19 should not have an impact on Sonia Gandhi.
"I have worked very closely with Sonia ji and have always said this that she believes in the modern concept of management - give someone a task and back him to the hilt and if some one doesn't perform he should perish," Singh said.
He said Sonia Gandhi should continue as party president irrespective of the poll outcome in the five states.
Exit polls have projected Congress losing power in Assam and Kerala.
