Days after a Congress leader questioned the process to elect party President, Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu on Saturday came out in support of Vice President Rahul Gandhi, saying he has a "vast political background" and the country needs his leadership.
"I have always been saying that Rahul Gandhi has a 'khandaani' (family) background (in politics). I believe that he has matured a lot and the time has come that the country is led by a khandaani person like Rahul Gandhi," Sidhu told reporters here.
"I have full faith in my leader. He is working towards a turning a defeat into a victory," he added.
On the Somnath temple controversy concerning Rahul Gandhi, Sidhu said: "God is within each of us as we are a secular community. It is the spirit of the Constitution that there should be no discrimination on the basis of caste, colour and creed."
Congress leader from Maharashtra Shehzad Poonawalla had questioned the process to elect party President, calling it "rigged".
