The Congress will fight with more vigour for the poor, party leader Rahul Gandhi said Wednesday and called upon people to put pressure on the Uttar Pradesh government for early implementation of the food security scheme.
Addressing a rally here, the Congress vice-president accused the opposition parties of creating roadblocks in the passage of the food security bill and land acquisition bill. The bills were later passed in the monsoon session of parliament.
"We will fight the battle of poor with more vigour. You fight the battle of the poor, the farmer and the youth with us," Gandhi said, urging women to side with the Congress.
Gandhi called upon people of Uttar Pradesh to exert pressure on the Akhilesh Yadav government to "implement the food security bill from today and not from 2014".
Referring to the Congress forming coalition governments after 2004 and 2009 Lok Sabha elections, Gandhi said the "government of the poor, government of common man" will again be formed after the 2014 elections.
Gandhi said the land acquisition bill will benefit farmers and food security bill will benefit the common man.
"We talked about right to food, land bill but the opposition kept stopping us. They raised slogans only to stop these bills," he said.
