Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Rakhi Birla got a unique birthday gift on Friday when she was elected the Deputy Speaker of the Delhi assembly.
The proposal to make Birla the Deputy Speaker was made by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and seconded by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia. The house, dominated by the AAP, backed the proposal by voice vote.
Assembly speaker Ram Niwas Goel presented her bouquet and welcomed her. Birla succeeds Bandana Kumari, also of the AAP who resigned last week.
Birla completed her post-graduation in Mass Communication and worked for a private news channel before she joined AAP in 2012.
Birla -- a legislator from Mangolpuri constituency -- was a cabinet minister during Arvind Kejriwal government's 49 days tenure from December 28, 2013 to February 14, 2014. She had portfolios of Women and Child, Social Welfare and Languages in Delhi Government.
