Senior Samajwadi Party (SP) leader Ramesh Yadav is set to be the next chairman of the legislative council of Uttar Pradesh.
With his being the lone nomination for the post, only a formal announcement is left to be made, party sources said.
Ramesh Yadav will succeed Ganesh Shankar Pandey whose term came to an end on January 15. Since then the senior most member of the legislative council (MLC) Om Prakash Sharma was acting as the protem chairman.
Legislative council (or Vidhan Parishad) is analogous to the Rajya Sabha, the upper house of parliament. Uttar Pradesh is one of the seven states that have bi-cameral legislature -- the legislative council as well as the legislative assembly (or Vidhan Sabha).
A four-time MLC, Ramesh Yadav hails from Etah and is known for his proximity to Mulayam Singh Yadav, the chief of the ruling Samajwadi Party.
He has been the president of Samajwadi Party in Etah district since the inception of the party.
