Hooliganism can work in the constituency of Maharashtra minister Narayan Rane but not in Goa, Speaker Rajendra Arlelkar said Thursday after Rane's son Nitesh was arrested for smashing a toll booth and beating up toll operators.

"What happened Tuesday was 'goondagiri' (hooliganism). Just because you can do it in your area, that does mean it can happen in Goa. This is a state where law and order is in place," Arlekar told reporters at the legislative assembly complex.

Arlekar is the legislator from Pernem, where Rane's son Nitesh and his entourage smashed a toll booth and beat up three toll booth operators.

Nitesh was subsequently arrested and later released on bail.

Arlekar said he had to personally intervene, after Nitesh's supporters stormed into Goa from Maharashtra's south Konkan belt, known to be the Rane family's bastion, and laid siege to the Pernem police station, where the politician's son was booked.

"Nitesh's supporters had started coming into Goa. This could have led to a fight. I went there. This kind of 'goondagiri' will not work in Goa," Arlekar said.
