Raninder Singh, son of Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, was on Saturday re-elected the president of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) for another four-year term.

Raninder defeated the president of the Uttar Pradesh Rifle Association Shyam Singh Yadav by an overwhelming 89-1 margin.

Addressing NRAI members after the election, Raninder assured them that he will take up the matter of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) with the Ministry of Finance through the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs.

He pointed out that the 18 percent tax levied on all imports, including duty-free imports, in the GST might have an adverse impact on the shooting sport, including on athletes vying to bring glory to the country.

"Most of the world-class equipment pertaining to the sport needs to be imported and was till now part of the customs duty free list. The NRAI expects an early resolution to the issue and will do all in its power to ensure that the athletes and the sport are not affected," he pointed out.

D.V. Seetharama Rao has been unanimously re-elected Secretary General for the second term while Karan Kumar has been elected Treasurer of the association. K.N. Singh Deo, Member of Parliament from Odisha, has been unanimously elected Senior Vice President.
