Thanks to rapid urbanisation, scooters have beaten other two-wheelers at growth and will reach a market share of 27 percent across India over the next two years, a senior TVS Motors official said Monday.

S. Arun Kumar, TVS regional sales manager for the Southern region, was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the Goa launch of TVS Scooty Zest 110 here.

"Rapid urbanisation, good mileage and increased utility as compared to motor-cycles has led to increased growth in the scooter segment," Kumar said.

Explaining, the official said that scooters, especially because of the storage they provide and the ability to ferry families more comfortably than motor-cycles, had also led to increased growth in the recent past.

"Rapid urbanisation in the last five years has driven the growth of the scooter industry and it will continue to drive its growth," he said.

The issue of scooters' mileage, which was once low in comparison to motor-cycles, he said, has also been sorted out.

The scooter market in India, he said, was growing at a rate of 31 percent, even as across India, the overall rate of growth in the two-wheeler segment was 12 percent.
