Kerala's Athira Surendran unleashed an effort of 12.86 metres in her very first attempt in the girls under-18 triple jump that not only broke the National and Meet record of 12.78 (G Gayathri of Tamil Nadu in 2008) but also won her the gold medal on the penultimate day of the 29th Junior National Athletics Championships here Friday.

Also breaking the National and Meet record was the top three finishers in the boys under-16 1000 metres sprint medley Tamil Nadu A (L Ravikumar, MS Arun, T Santosh Kumar, R Balakrishnan), Haryana A (Nuzrat, Pradeep, Baljeet, Anuj Sangwan) and Delhi A (Ashwani Shokeen, Nikhil, Beant Singh, Arif Khan).

While the Tamil Nadu foursome clocked one minute, 58.02 seconds, Harayana A stopped the clock at 1:58.19 and Delhi returned 1:58.74 to improve on the National and Meet record of 1:58.99 that Tamil Nadu has set last year.

Nirbhay Singh of Haryana won the discus throw gold in the boys under-18 category with an effort of 59.62 metres that bettered the Meet Record of 59,02 set by Dinesh Kumar (Haryana) in 2005.

Athletes from Kerala again dominated the day as they took their cumulative tally to 444 points, well ahead of Tamil Nadu (276.5) and Haryana (228.5) while hosts Karnataka were in fifth position with 134.5, behind Uttar Pradesh (168.5).
