Eighty percent of the flats to be allotted by the DDA should be reserved for the residents of the national capital, the state unit of the BJP said Tuesday.

In a letter written to Delhi Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung, party chief Satish Upadhyay justified his demand by arguing that there were not enough affordable houses in the city for its residents.

"The DDA (Delhi Development Authority) should reserve 80 percent of flats to be allotted for the citizens of Delhi," he said adding that anyone who votes in Delhi or is settled here is a citizen and an eligible candidate.

"People in other states get reservation in government schemes. People of Delhi should get this benefit, too, especially those who don't own a house," he demanded.

Lack of cheap housing results in illegal constructions and restricts the city's ability to develop in a planned manner, he added.
