Former Manchester United and England star made his debut for Major League Soccer (MLS) side D.C. United as the club won 3-1 against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
Eyebrows were raised when Rooney did not find a place in the starting line up on Saturday but the ex-England captain was one of the seven available substitutes for coach Ben Olsen in the teams's first game at Audi Field.
Rooney replaced striker Darren Mattocks in the 58th minute and provided the assist for D.C.'s second goal of the night.
Rooney, all-time leading scorer for England's national team and Man United, led his boyhood outfit Everton with 11 goals last season before leaving for MLS.
Previous English stars to have plied their trade in the United States are David Beckham, Frank Lampard, and Steven Gerrard.
