The Delhi government will provide Rs 1 crore to the family of a school teacher stabbed to death by two of his students, it was announced on Tuesday.

Mukesh Kumar, a government school teacher at Nangloi here, was stabbed on Monday by two Class XII students in front of their classmates for allegedly having them rusticated for low attendance.

He succumbed to his injuries at a hospital on Tuesday, a day after he was attacked.

Both the students, one of whom is a minor, have been apprehended, police said.

"Both the students were frequent absentees and indisciplined. Kumar used to point that out and take steps to correct them and maintain discipline in the school. The minor student was rusticated from the school because of poor attendance," Joint commissioner of police (south-western range) Dependra Pathak said.

"The accused on interrogation revealed that they planned to teach Kumar a lesson and accordingly bought a knife and stabbed him. After committing the crime, they roamed around Nithari lake and Begumpur area before they were apprehended," said Pathak, adding that the knife and a blood stained cloth were recovered from the duo.

The government has also ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident, Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia said.

"There can be no compensation for the family's agony... The government will give Rs 1 crore to his family as immediate financial assistance," Sisodia said.

He added that there are around 26 lakh students studying in Delhi schools and one cannot call all of them criminals because of the criminal tendencies of just two students.

"I appeal to the parents that it is high time that we should talk to our children and teach them to respect our teachers," he said.
