An annual running event was held in Japan's Kagawa Prefecture's 785 steps of Konpira shrine, a media reported.

About 500 people between the age of three and 80 took part in the event held on Sunday. It's aimed at giving participants a chance to pray for their health, public broadcaster NHK reported.

The participants ran up and then down the long staircase.

The organiser said the fastest runner completed the course in about 12 minutes.

A 47-year-old man from Takamatsu city said the last climb was difficult but he was happy to finish the race.

The shrine is believed to have been constructed in the 1st century.
