Saint-Gobain to expand float glass facility near Chennai

French float glass-maker Saint-Gobain SA will expand its facility near here at an outlay of Rs.1,000 crore over the next two years, a top official of the Indian subsidiary said on Wednesday.

The company will invest Rs.1,000 crore to set up a second magnetron coater plant and third float glass line, Saint-Gobain India managing director B. Santhanam said.

The fresh investment will take the cumulative investment in the company's plant in Sriperumbudur near here to over Rs.3,000 crore.

He said after the expansion, slated to be completed by 2018, the plant capacity will go up by 1,000 tonne to 2,500 tonne per day and serve overseas markets like Africa, Middle-East, South Asia and Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries.

Saint-Gobain has a manufacturing footprint with plants in Bhiwadi (Rajasthan), Jhagadia (Gujarat) and Sriperumbudur (Tamil Nadu).

The company started its operations in 2000 at Sriperumbudur and expanded the operations with an overall investment of over Rs.3,500 crore.

The Sriperumbudur factory complex now has two float glass plants with a total capacity of 1,500 tonnes per day; an automotive processling lines fo 1.2 million car sets; a 50 million sq.ft. eco-friendly mirror and lacquered line; a 60 million square feet magnetron coater line for high selective, energy-efficient glass and a glass solutions facility for safety and security needs.
