In the wake of the monsoon, the North and South Delhi Municipal Corporations launched a "sanitation and cleanliness drive" in the national capital Friday.

It is a week-long drive which will focus on solid waste lifting, cleanliness of public urinals, control of water and vector-borne diseases, repair and maintenance of roads, foot paths, pavements, maintenance of parks, functioning of parks, street lights and high-mast lights.

"The drive would make citizens more aware about sanitation and focus to make north Delhi more clean and green," said Yogendra Chandolia, mayor of the north Delhi corporation.

Fogging and spraying of insecticide for prevention of the outbreak of water and vector-borne diseases, distribution of chlorine tablets in unauthorised colonies and slums would also take place.

"There will also be sensitisation on cleanliness among students, teachers of municipal schools," added Chandolia.

Regular field inspections of different areas will also be done.

In south Delhi, the drive would also involve proper regulation of markets so as to ensure no encroachment and extension of shops on the foot paths.

There would be proper regulation to ensure that the street vendors are there to clear the obstruction.

"Special drive for plantation of trees and maintenance of public parks and the sanitation department will also ensure availability of sanitation workers on field to conduct the drive," said Manish Gupta, south Delhi commissioner.
